Understanding Websites: Website Branding

The branding & design of a website is important for a trade professional because it is one of the first things a customer notices. Colour is also often the first thing that many people will use to associate your business with. If you wish to convey that your business is professional and does high quality work, your branding should help you with that message. Let’s take a look at how consistent branding can help your website stand out…

How do you do it?

Before building a website around your business branding, you should be completely happy with the logo for your business. Here is what we at Expert Trades believe makes a good logo:

  • A logo should not be text-heavy, but should rather convey the message behind your company.
  • Try to incorporate imagery associated with your trade so that everyone knows straight away what your business is about.
  • Your logo should look also look professional. These days, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to get a good quality logo.


To illustrate this point, let’s take a look at why consistency is important for your logo.

Colour Scheme 

Ensure that your website is consistent with the rest of your brand. If your business colours are blue and green, don’t go and choose yellow and red as the colour scheme for your website! Choosing the right colour scheme can be one of the most important choices you make with your website. Avoid using a background that is black or too dark. This can overpower the rest of the page, which is obviously not what you want to do. White backgrounds, like the ones we use for the websites we build, offer a feeling of cleanliness and efficiency.  

At the same time, a white background offers a good level of contrast to most other colours, making a website easy on the eyes. There is a very good reason why powerhouses such as Google are made up of white pages.  In terms of fonts used on your website, select one or two and use them consistently throughout. Make sure that the fonts you choose are easy to read.

Ultimately, websites for trades should be consistent with the rest of your brand. Your business cards, van and website should all complement each other and be consistent with your branding and the message you want customers to understand.

These are the kind of details that homeowners look for in a business website, and your website should be no different. Just because you are a sole trader or small business does not mean that you can’t expect to have a well-designed website with consistent branding.
